But for real animals, you might be lucky and spot the humpback whale migration from the beach during the winter months! All you need to do is look out to the horizon and spot the occasional burst of water spurting out of the ocean.
At the nearby and iconic Macadamia Castle which is located on the Pacific Highway at Knockrow. This place has been around for over 30 years and has become something of a local institution. The Macadamia nut is the only native Australian food plant that has been commercially harvested and it’s a popular snack for both locals and tourists alike. You can even cook with Macadamia nut oil - it smells great when it hits the hot pan. The café at the Macadamia Castle serves many delicious snacks and meals, with Macadamias being a central feature.
Still sticking with Australian native products, there is also the Thursday Plantation which is both the brand for essential oil products and the original home of Tea Tree. Tea Tree Oil is a popular product used in beauty products and treatments and has a strong, but pleasant aromatic smell.
Where to Stay & Eat?
Being a coastal town, it’s almost a criminal offence to not have fish and chips near the beach. There are numerous fish and chip shops at Ballina and nearby Lennox Heads to feast upon some of the local catch. Otherwise, enjoy the view over the beautiful Richmond River along with natural, mornay or kilpatrick rock and pacific oysters when they are in season.
Turn up to a local pub, and you will be sure to chat to one of the friendly locals. The beer is cold, and you can use it to wash down a hearty pub lunch.

Byron Bay is located to the north, and is a favourite for travellers doing the east coast trail of Australia. Byron Bay is also well known for being a magnet for those craving the alternative scene. Otherwise, go for day trips around the Northern Rivers area and visit quaint towns like Bangalow, or if you are after something more alternative, the bizarre hippy town of Nimbin is sure to offer you a few bizarre sights.
To the waves as you are walking along the beaches. There is nothing like escaping the city rat race by feeling the sand between your toes, and hearing the waves crash onto the beach.
Playing Skirmish Paintball at Ballina Adventure Park if you don’t feel like waking up the next morning with a few bruises! Actually, Skirmish is a lot of fun if you manage to land a paintball on one of your enemy targets, but it’s no fun if you are nailed yourself by a stray ball of dye!
