The ‘Celtic Tiger’ may have lost its roar of late, but that hasn’t seemed to have stopped tourists visiting Dublin or from finding cheap car hire in Dublin. In the ninth century, the Vikings set up home, even though the Irish (mainly drawn from Celtic stock) managed to usurp them in the 11th century. The English proved to be a much more resilient lot, first interfering in Irish affairs, then taking control of the city in 1649.
Even though Dublin expanded rapidly and prospered economically during the British Empire, an urge to be independent never waned and in 1916, the Easter Rising set the wheels in motion for a separation from London.
