Gibraltar is a large karstic cape jutting from the southern tip of Spain, where Europe meets Africa. Dominated by an striking monolith (‘The Rock’), Gibraltar is around 5 kilometres in length and contains some 143 caves, around 50km of roads, and miles of tunnel. Gibraltar has long been a target for attacks due to its positioning, however the impenetrable rock has stood firm over the centuries and is a fascinating and beautiful mesh of histories and cultures. Gibraltar’s history begins in ancient Greek mythology, when it was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules. Legend has it that Hercules pushed the rock with his - well, Herculean strength - from Mount Acho in Morocco to pinpoint the end of the Mediterranean. In the beginning of the 1700s it was relinquished to England and has remained a British colony ever since, despite numerous attempts by the Spanish to regain it.
