Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands and is the main city in Mallorca, being home to half the population of the Balearic Islands. The city lies on the Bay of Palma in the south west of Mallorca. Since the 1950’s, Palma de Mallorca has enjoyed the benefits of mass tourism, and today it is truly a tourist stronghold and one of Europe’s premier sun holiday destinations, with some 20 million passengers using the city’s airport annually. The increasing availability of cheap and low cost package holidays in Mallorca, coupled with the city’s (and indeed the island’s) favourable weather, beautiful beaches and abundant tourist amenities ensures that Palma de Mallorca is likely to remain an attractive tourist destination well into the future.
Eating Out/Nightlife in Palma de Mallorca
Eating out in Palma de Mallorca is a pleasure with the city enjoying a Catalan-influenced Mediterranean cuisine. Pork and wonderful fresh seafood dominate menus, with local dishes including Paella, Sopes Mallorquines and Frit Mallorquí. For cheap eats, a budget friendly dining option is to go for the low cost option of tapas, which is done very well in Palma de Mallorca. This option is not only a budget-saver; it is also a suitable way for vegetarians to dine in an area where meat and seafood is very prominent.
The nightlife is buzzing in Palma, albeit with a slightly less frenzied, and slightly more sophisticated atmosphere than can be found in the beach resorts around the island. Some bigger clubs are expensive to enter, but the blow is lessened slightly by admission including one drink. There are jazz clubs, dance clubs, Latin clubs and bustling bars serving cheap drinks in friendly atmosphere throughout Palma, with something to suit most tastes and budgets.
There are plenty of quiet spots and relatively untouched destinations on the island of Mallorca. Discover your own Mallorca with <
Things to See/Do in Palma de Mallorca
Many of Palma’s finest attractions can be found close to the port – the Stock Exchange, the Royal Palace, and the Castle of Bellver are here. The Castle of Bellver is a wonderful old fortress that has dominated the Palma skyline since the fourteenth century and is certainly worth seeing, however it is La Seu Cathedral that is Palma’s most breathtaking attraction.
For a non-cultural day of fun, try a visit to Aqualand, situated on the Arenal Motorway in Palma. A huge waterpark containing slides and pools to suit everyone, from the timid to the daredevil. Admission for adults is €20, children pay less and there is a senior discount – a little more expensive than a visit to the churches and museums in Palma, but definitely great value for money.
There really is an abundance of fascinating sights and attractions to be enjoyed in Palma, so although you may have nothing but sunshine and the seaside on your mind, it is certainly worth exploring the city before you hop in your low cost Mallorca rental car from Argus Car Hire Mallorca and head for the beach resorts.
