Mombasa

Idyllically situated on the tropical southwest coast of Kenya, Mombasa brings in droves of beach goers every year. The city remains one of the country’s top coastal vacation destinations. The mix of cultures, architecture and entertainment makes for a perfect holiday while in Kenya. With a history stretching back into the 12th century, Mombasa bursts with things to see and do.

Day Trips/Events in Mombasa

Exploring the surrounding area outside of Mombasa will leave visitors occupied for hours on end. Nearby Mamba village showcases the largest crocodile farm in east Africa. The Bamburi Nature Trail features a large animal sanctuary to get to know the area’s animals even more. Of course, the main attraction outside of Mombasa is the Gedi Ruins. The Ruins display all that remains of a Swahili town that blossomed hundreds of years ago. The ruins note that mosques, palaces and homes once stood in a grand fashion on this stretch of land.

Aside from worthwhile day trips, visitors can also experience several events and goings on in Mombasa. The city is known for its East African Safari rides held by a number of carriers. The Mombasa Carnival kicks things up a notch every year with parades and floats covering a variety of cultural and religious groups in Kenya.

Eating Out in Mombasa

With the city’s close proximity to the Indian Ocean, travellers can bet they will find fresh seafood on most restaurant menus. Aside from juicy seafood, diners can feast their eyes and stomachs on rich international inspired cuisine in Mombasa. The city holds cuisines from around the world, including Indian, Italian and Swahili influences.

Things to see/do in Mombasa

Most travellers begin by wandering through the Old Town of Mombasa. The city is crawling with rich architecture and linguistics. Shoppers will find a few nice shops where they can spend their vacation money. Also  worth a look are the Mombasa Tusks, created to appeal to Queen Elizabeth during her visit in 1952. The Tusks represent the ivory trade in the city. Of course, some may come to view these attractions or the Hindu Temple in town, but most are here for one reason, to lie out on one of the famed beaches in the city. Mombasa and the surrounding area claim some of the best beaches in the world. Water sports lovers can observe the rich marine life in the city.

Travellers to Mombasa are going to want to hire a car so that they can see it all and experience Kenya to its fullest degree. Argus Car Hire is the go to carrier for personal transportation while in the area.
