Paphos Mini Guide
Paphos is a city lying on the southwest coast of Cyprus, and the story goes that it was built around the spot where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, was born. While less known than Cyprus’ main city of Larnaca, Paphos is enjoying a wonderful rejuvenation, largely on the strength of its ever-growing tourist industry. The city is divided in two – an upper part on the hill that is the commercial centre of the town, and the lower section, Kato Paphos, which is home to the main archaeological places of interest as well as the bulk of the hotels and guesthouses.
There is a small airport serving the city, Paphos International Airport. ArgusCar Hire Paphos offers Paphos Car Hire right from Paphos International Airport, so that you can pick up your Paphos Car Rental as soon as you arrive. From here it is a short 15km drive to the centre of Paphos.

There are plenty of historical attractions in and around Paphos to keep you entertained for the duration of your holiday. The main tourist attraction is the entire area of Kato Paphos. Not only does this part of the town have all the necessary amenities for a great sun holiday, it also boasts a superb range of historical attractions and ancient sites of interest.
The underground catacombs of Agia Solomoni in Kato Paphos are marked by a large pistachio tree, often adorned with pieces of cloth tied on as offerings by the faithful – it is believed b6y many that the sacred tree has healing properties. Underneath the ground here are the catacombs, which can be entered and explored (bring a torch – it’s dark down there!). The Tombs of the Kings is situated roughly 2km north of Kato Paphos and is a popular attraction in the city. Admission is cheap and the tombs are quite impressive, carved from solid rock with frescoed walls. The Mosaics of Paphos are a series of striking decorated floors depicting mythological scenes, and can be found in a series of old noblemen’s villas. There is a very low cost of admission to the villas, so this attraction can easily be incorporated into a budget sightseeing day in Paphos.
The Aphrodite Hills Golf Course, the Secret Valley Golf Course and the Tsada Golf Course are all located in Paphos. The two more low cost courses are Tsada and Secret Valley, so for a budget golf holiday these may be more suitable, however for a better quality course it’s sometimes worth spending that little bit more.
Eating out/nightlife in Paphos
Cyprus cuisine can be likened to that of Greece, with a definite Mediterranean flavour and style, however the position of the island at the crossroads of the Middle East, Africa and Europe means that it has a few little extra exotic influences. Eating out in Paphos can be a great experience, with many restaurants providing music and dancers to entertain while you eat. If you want a more authentic Paphos meal (not so tailored to a tourist market), it is recommended to look for restaurants away from the beachfront promenade, places where the island natives choose to eat.
Drive around Paphos with Paphos Car Hire to find all of the areas hidden gems. With ArgusCar Hire Paphos you have three freedom to explore Paphos at your leisure.
There are plenty of cheap options for some low cost budget-friendly dining, with thrifty options throughout the city (again, the cheap restaurants will be found away from the promenade). Try the traditional meze dishes, which can incorporate up to 30 little delicacies in one sitting – it’s a great way to get a complete experience of the flavour of Cyprus’ cuisine. Halloumi is the island’s very own cheese, and is delicious when grilled or barbequed – it doesn’t melt, but rather crisps and browns on the outside and goes deliciously gooey on the inside.
There is a great range of lively and busy bars and clubs to be found in Paphos, and the great party atmosphere keeps people reveling well into the wee small hours of the morning. Alcohol is quite low cost, and is particularly cheap if bought in a local supermarket.
Day Trips/Drives from Paphos
A great trip to make from Paphos – and an easy one when you use Paphos Car Hire with ArgusCar Hire Paphos – is to the Baths of Aphrodite, a stunning natural grotto situated about 50km north of Paphos on the Akamas Peninsula (near Polis). Here, legend has it, is where the Greek goddess of love used to bathe. A tranquil, clear pool is sheltered by a fig tree. Bring a picnic and look forward to a peaceful – and cheap – day out.
A short drive to the Troodos Mountains is another highly recommended day trip while staying in Paphos. Sleepy villages and monasteries punctuate quiet, undulating landscape, and there are plenty of walking/hiking/biking trails to enjoy.
