The cities of Sri Lanka are worth a look too. Colombo and Kandy bear all the hallmarks of foreign colonial powers-Dutch style buildings stand side by side alongside Victorian era British mansions and Portuguese dwellings. Colombo is a buzzing city that is a hive of activity, whatever time of year you visit. The island’s largest city boasts a wonderful selection of museums and galleries, as well as an excellent range of restaurants and eateries, where it’s possible to sample the delicious local fare. A trip to the local beach at Mount Lavinia (10km from the city) is a pleasant day trip option. Cinnamon Gardens makes for another worthwhile excursion, boasting beautiful mansions and elegant tree lined streets.
