Venice, Italy – one of the most famous cities in the world. Venice has been featured in so many television shows and movies, that it almost feels like a familiar movie set when you set foot here. It’s more than likely that you will be separated from your well-earned euro notes and shrapnel after a couple of days in Venice. Things such as the ubiquitous Venetian masks are everywhere, as well as mini gondolas. Or even buy a short ride on a real gondola!

Like everywhere in Italy, food is part of daily life in Venice. I’m a big fan of the live to eat culture, not eating to live. It’s worth setting aside a couple of hours for a long lunch! Venice has thousands of restaurants and eateries to satisfy anyone’s appetite, but if you are willing to look beyond the tourist scene, you’ll find some great family run places that make the off the beaten path search worth it.
‘Drink’ is always, always related to ‘Eat’ in Italy, and Venice is no exception. There’s always a carafe of superb Italian wine accompanying your meal. There’s nothing like washing down a delicious Italian dish with the local vino. Spend a couple of hours for lunch and dinner, and you’ll become addicted to this way of incorporating wine as one of your essential food groups for the day.
Venice isn’t that big, but it has to cater for the millions of people from around the world who visit this UNESCO site each year. Hence, accommodation options are available for every budget, from backpackers to high end hotels. Sometimes, availability can be an issue at peak times, but you should not have a drama if you book ahead.
Where to Go?
As mentioned before, Venice is best explored on foot. Well, not that you have a choice anyway, because there aren’t any cars allowed on Venice proper. I’ve enjoyed walking down random streets without a map to see what would happen. You do eventually manage to find your way back to wherever you are staying!
Why not take a water taxi to the nearby island of Murano. It’s here where they make the Murano glass, where all sorts of glass figures and objects are hand made in front of your eyes. You probably won’t escape with much change if you decide to buy one of these intricate pieces, but it’s worth a look and the water taxi trip.
To the Gondola operators persuade the hordes of tourists to go on a Gondola ride out on the open water and through the canals. And then see the tourists fork out over a hundred euros for the privilege!
Visiting St Marks Square when it’s high tide unless you have a snorkel, a wetsuit, and a set of flippers. St Mark’s Square floods every now and then when there is a very high tide, so you probably won’t want to compete with the fish for your food if you want to check out the intricate church there.
