Malta is the ideal destination for a touring holiday with Malta car hire for many reasons.  The Maltese islands have long been referred to as the Mediterranean’s ‘open air museum’. For over 7,000 years, the islands have been the setting for some of history’s most interesting events and civilizations.  Malta is home to ancient ruins, which date further back than Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids. Malta is also inextricably linked to the medieval order of the Knights of St John, who settled on the island as their stronghold for defending Christianity.

The island of Malta is quite compact, at just 246 sq km.  Its unspoilt sandy beaches and quiet coves make it a popular holiday destination. These beautiful beaches, coupled with its fascinating history make it a fascinating place to visit.

The islanders of Malta and its neighbouring island, Gozo enjoy a fun filled calendar of festas, fireworks and parties.  A major carnival takes place each spring. Malta’s capital, Valetta is home to beautiful examples of Baroque buildings and castles. The island is small but perfectly formed and perfect for touring as it takes no more than an hour to drive between any two points,

Malta is situated around 97km to the south of Sicily and 257km from Libya, a key position in the Mediterranean that has contributed to its rich historical heritage,  Malta’s final occupants were British and only granted the island its independence in 1964. The most influencial occupiers by far were the Knights of Saint John, who took over the island in 1530 and reigned for 270 years.  Traces of their legacy can be seen to this day in local churches and monuments.

Malta has an enigmatic side too.  There are some 30 prehistoric sites on the island including huge Neolithic temples and freestanding stone buildings.
