Those who explore Alicante with car hire will find plenty to see and do. The city is renowned for being one of Europe’s most popular holiday hubs and the town offers a mild and pleasant climate as well as a lively events calendar.
Alicante has an authentic Spanish feel to it, with picturesque cobbled walkways including the Rambla de Mendez Nunez and the Avenida Alfonso el Sabio, which are brimming with terrace cafés, and colourful promenades offering the ideal place to relax. First-time visitors will notice that Alicante has a distinctly African atmosphere, with women selling African carvings all along the waterfront and esplanades of the city. Meanwhile, the historic central quarter is home to myriad baroque buildings which serve as a constant reminder to the city’s seafaring past.
Alicante has a long and fascinating history. It was originally founded by the Greeks who named it Akra Leuke, meaning ‘white peak’. Later, it was captured by the Romans who called it “Lucentum”, meaning City of Light. Alicante was conquered by the Moors in the second half of the eight century, before being taken over by the Castilian crown in 1246. By 1308, it had become part of the kingdom of Valencia.
