arguscarhire.com Calling on EU to Accelerate Harmonisation of Road Signs on Europe Day, 9th May 2006

arguscarhire.com, Europe’s leading low cost car hire provider will be calling on the EU on Europe Day, Tuesday 9th May 2006, to accelerate harmonisation of road signs across Europe.

In a Pan-European survey conducted by ArgusCarHire.com of 3,000 European drivers, it was found that more that 56% of drivers had serious deficiencies understanding road signs across different European countries.

According to Greg Turley, Founder and CEO of arguscarhire.com "As we approach the busiest season for foreign leisure travel and car rental, our survey has revealed some very concerning findings; more than one in two European drivers do not understand or are confused by essential road signs, signals and road markings in different European countries”.

According to Turley “Even basic motorway direction signs are confusing, with some countries using green to indicate motorways and blue for ordinary roads, while other EU member states do the opposite. We believe there is an urgent need for the EU to expedite harmonisation of road signs to boost road safety and will be lobbying MEPs on Europe Day, 9th May 2006”.
