The maximum legal limit for blood alcohol is 0.049 per cent. Anyone suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol may be subjected to a blood test.
Drivers should always carry their driver’s licence and rental documents.
It is compulsory to carry two warning triangles. Spiked tyres and snow chains are permitted on mountain roads in winter.
In Cyprus it is customary to drive on the left and to overtake on the right. It is compulsory for front and rear passengers to wear seatbelts if fitted.
Children aged under five cannot travel as front seat passengers. Children over five and under ten year of age must be seated using a suitable child restraint system.
The use of the vehicle horn is prohibited between 2200 and 0600 hours and driving anywhere in the vicinity of hospitals. A GPS based navigation system that has maps indicating the locations of fixed speed cameras must have the ‘fixed speed camera PoI (Points of Interest)’ function deactivated.
Vehicle lights must be used between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise. The use of spotlights is prohibited.
Traffic police in Cyprus may impose on the spot fines for traffic offences.
