Tourist Information
Drivers are required to carry a license, insurance and rental documents.
It is not compulsory for visiting motorists to carry a warning triangle, but they are strongly recommended to do so, as its use is compulsory for registered drivers. It is recommended that visitors equip their vehicle with a first-aid kit and a set of replacement bulbs. Please check with your supplier to ensure that this has been included in your rental.
Drivers should ensure that their vehicles have been adapted to suit winter conditions. This includes winter tyres and anti-freeze fluid for the washer system. Extreme weather conditions may also require the use of snow chains. The law does not specify which type of tyre is 'appropriate'; generally speaking the opinion is that any type of tyre except for summer tyres is appropriate, including all-year tyres. Please ensure that winter tyres bear the mark M&S or display the snowflake symbol on the sidewall. Drivers whose cars have been equipped with summer tyres may not take to the roads. Drivers who violate this law face a fine of €20. An on-the-spot penalty of €40 is imposed for those who obstruct traffic.
From January 1st 2008, restrictions on the circulation of vehicles will be introduced in some German cities in order to cut-down on levels of emission of fine particles in some areas. The zones where restrictions apply are indicated by signs showing coloured vignettes ("Plakette") in green, yellow or red. To enter these areas, drivers must stick a vignette on their vehicle windscreen. Vignettes can be obtained from technical inspection centres or approved garages. The fine for not displaying a sticker is €40. The colour of the vignette issued depends on the type of engine and Euro classification of the vehicle. The fee is a 'one-off' charge and is considered valid as long as it remains fixed in the vehicle.
It is customary to drive on the right hand side of the road and to pass on the left hand side.
Passengers are required to wear seatbelts in the front and rear of the vehicle.
Buses have right of way when leaving bus stops.
Drivers must use dipped headlights during poor visibility.
In built up areas, the use of horns is only permitted for emergencies.
In cities, drivers should always give way to trams and not pass them at official stops.
It is against the law to park against oncoming traffic.
It is against the law to overtake or pass a school bus that has stopped in a built-up area to let passengers on or off. A fine will be imposed for non-compliance.
On the spot fines can be issued for driving offences including speeding, parking, and running out of fuel on the motorway.
