Lower limits of 80km/h apply outside built up areas. 100km/h on dual carriageways and 110km/h on motorways apply in wet weather and to visiting drivers who have held their driving license for less than two years.

A warning triangle is compulsory for vehicles with an unladen weight exceeding 1,524kg.
It is compulsory for front/rear seat occupants to wear seat belts if fitted.
Children under 12 may not travel as front seat passengers unless a suitable restraint system has been installed. Children under 12 years of age and measuring less than 1.5m high require a suitable child seat, i.e. a booster cushion
Drivers must not sound horns between 2330 and 0700 hours.
Some level crossings have manual gates which drivers are responsible for opening and closing.
Fog lights must only be used during fog or falling snow.
Horns may not be used between 11pm and 7am.
Dipped headlights should be used during poor daytime visibility.
The 'give way' signs are red triangles with the point at the bottom and the words 'yield right of way' or "geill sli".
On the spot fines are imposed for parking and speeding offences. Wheel clamps are in use. In some areas, parked cars may be towed away if causing an obstruction. A significant fee is charged for its release.
