Drivers should carry a red warning triangle in case of emergency. This must be placed at the rear of the car in the event of an accident or breakdown.

All passengers are required to wear seatbelts whilst travelling, both in the front and the rear of the vehicle.

A high visibility jacket/waistcoat should be worn if a driver/passenger exits a vehicle that has broken down on the carriageway of all motorways and main or busy airports. The jacket should be carried in the passenger compartment of the vehicle and must not be stored in the boot. In built up areas, the use of a horn is prohibited during the hours of darkness, except during cases of immediate danger.

Dipped headlights should be used in poor daytime visibility and in tunnels.

Portugal

In Portugal, it is customary to drive on the right and to overtake on the left. Drivers must give way to trams both when they overtake you and as they approach you from the right. Some roads in Portugal are three lanes wide. The middle lane is used for overtaking from either direction.

Children under 12 and measuring less than 1.50 metres in height should not travel as front seat passengers. Children must travel in the rear in a special restraint system that has been adapted to their size, unless the vehicle only has two seats or is not fitted with seatbelts. Children under 3 can be seated in the front passenger seat if using a suitable restraint, however, the airbag must be switched off if using a rear-facing restraint systemm.

On the spot fines are in operation. Fines are particularly heavy for speeding offences. The police can impose the fine and collect 1-quarter of the maximum fine and must give a receipt for the amount of fine paid. Illegally parked vehicles can be clamped or towed away and a fine may be imposed.
