Drivers should carry a copy of their driver’s license, rental agreement and insurance documents.
Renters should check that their vehicle has a set of replacement bulbs, the tools to fit them and a warning triangle, two are recommended, as in an accident/ breakdown situation, local officials may impose a fine if only one is produced.
It is compulsory for front/rear seat occupants to wear seat belts.
Children up to the age of 12 and measuring less than 135cm in height travelling in the front seat of a car should be seated in a child restraint system adapted to their size and weight. Children measuring over 135cm in height may use an adult seat belt. Children under 125cm in height, travelling in the rear seat must also be placed in a child restraint system adapted to their size and weight.
It is not mandatory to carry a high-visibility jacket in the vehicle and Spanish police cannot fine a foreign motorist who fails to carry one. However the wearing of a high visibility jacket or waistcoat is compulsory if the driver or passengers exit the vehicle that has broken down on the carriageway of all motorways and main busy roads. Renters should be aware that by law, car hire companies are not under any obligation to supply them to persons hiring vehicles, so often they don't.
In winter, spikes on spiked tyres must not exceed 2mm in length and must only be used on roads covered with ice or snow.
Two warning triangles must be carried at all times.
A driver who wears glasses should carry a spare pair with them.
The use of snow chains is recommended in snowy weather conditions.
It is customary to drive on the right hand side of the road. Never obstruct the fast lanes. On some motorways and open roads, you may be allowed to overtake moving traffic on the left.
You may not overtake trams whilst passengers are getting on or off.
When overtaking outside built-up areas drivers are expected to beep their horn during the day and flash their lights at night to show their intention.
Using full headlights in built-up areas is prohibited. Drivers should use sidelights or dipped headlights, depending on how well lit the roads are. Dipped headlights must be used in tunnels.
On-the spot fines are imposed for those who break driving laws. An official receipt should always be obtained. Vehicles parked illegally can be towed away. Wheel clamps are also in use.
