I had problems previously with hiring a car in the states. I know you learn by experience but where I had been caught before, Argus had the loop holes covered.

Speed Limits in USA
The speed limit in most states is 65 miles per hour (about 110km/hr) except when signs indicate slower speeds. Speed limits are strictly enforced by radar in many states. Speeding in any area under road construction is strictly enforced with heavy penalties.
Drinking and Driving in USA
Driving under the influence of alcohol is forbidden and strictly enforced in all states.
Police can ask a driver suspected of drink driving to undergo a breath test. A fine of up to £5,000 and/or 6 months’ imprisonment and 12 months withdrawal of a driving license can be imposed if it’s the first time. The police may also carry out tests to detect whether a driver may be under the influence of drugs.
Please take our advice and don’t drink if you’re driving.

An international Driving Permit IDP serves as an official translation of the holder’s driver’s license into 10 foreign languages. The purpose of an IDP is to supplement, not replace your valid government issued license. It serves as a translation of a driver’s license and helps authorities to understand your license. However it does not provide driving privileges by itself. We suggest, especially if your foreign license is not in English that you contact the automobile association or driving authorities in your home country to get an international driving permit before travelling, as the United States does not issue international driver’s permits to foreign drivers.
Almost all states have laws requiring the driver and front passengers to wear seat belts. Many states also require children to wear seat belts in the back seats.
Each of the 50 states has their own set of individual traffic laws and regulations. Most laws are the same, although some have slightly different rules. Wherever you are renting your car, you should ask the agent if there are any special driving rules in that state. When driving in multiple states, check specific guidebooks for special driving rules.
Drivers must stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. In most states, drivers must stop for pedestrians who step out anywhere on the road.
Making right turns on red signals after stopping (and checking the path is clear of pedestrians) is allowed in most states unless there is a specific restriction posted at the intersection and traffic lights show a red arrow in the place of the red light. Some areas allow you to make a left turn on red going from a one-way street onto another one-way street.
In urban areas, do not block intersections when traffic backs up. This is known as "blocking the box" and may result in you getting a ticket from police for causing gridlock.
