Introduction

Heraklion is the capital of the largest Greek island of Crete, and has undergone a significant makeover in recent years in an effort to highlight the city’s rich cultural history. Although the city itself is far from picturesque, the redevelopment has given the historic centre some pleasant pedestrian strips and a waterfront which is well worth checking out. As well as being a great place to indulge in a spot of retail therapy, there are plenty of cultural destinations to enjoy, including museums, art galleries and churches, all steeped in Greek history and mythology.

Highlights & Hotspots

Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a hugely popular attraction and is home to many Greek artefacts, many collected several thousand years ago. Highlights include the Phaestos disc, whose purpose and meaning remain disputed to this day, classic Hellenic and Roman sculptures, wall paintings, jewellery and pottery. During summer, try visiting early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the crowds.
The Natural History Museum of Crete is as fun and educational for adults as it is for children, with a variety of animals (both living and preserved) and a play and learn area featuring caves amongst other things. The basement hosts an earthquake simulator, which is regarded as a highlight, but not recommended for the faint hearted!
The more adventurous amongst you may wish to try horseback riding at Karteros beach, where you can also experience rock climbing of up to 50 feet. Amoudara is Heraklions main beach however, and has a three kilometre sandy strip, bars, cafes and also ‘Technopolis’, which is both a modern multiplex cinema and open air theatre.
For the best Greek cuisine the island has to offer, head to the award winning Kipos ton Gefeson, where the décor is as good as the food itself. It’s highly recommended you dine al fresco here as the outdoor terrace with its many trees and plants is a beautiful setting for a romantic meal or family occasion.
