Car Hire Skiathos

Skiathos is a Greek island lying just over a mile east of the main coast. It’s also the name of the island’s main town, which is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to the Sporades Islands. Skiathos is the most popular destination with people who want excitement rather than peace and quiet, boasting a lively nightlife among other attractions. Despite its small size, there is plenty on the island to keep visitors occupied. The beaches are popular, while a walk around the edge of Skiathos is sure to reward visitors with great views at every turn. Meanwhile, some of the other islands in the Sporades archipelago are within easy reach by boat or ferry, as is the Greek mainland.

Ideal car

The road network is a little basic in places, but what roads are there on Skiathos are pretty narrow and have plenty of tight corners. For that reason, you should drive a smaller car here.

Important things to note

Many of the roads on the island are actually dirt roads, but are largely safe to drive on due to the dry local climate.

Skiathos town is perhaps the only part of the island where traffic can be seen, although it can get heavier in summer.

Highlights & Hotspots

The Kastro site in the medieval heart of the island is one of the most important historical landmarks in this part of the country. Abandoned in the 19th century, Kastro is worth visiting purely for anyone who wants to see medieval architecture at its best.
In Skiathos town, you can see the home of famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, who wrote over 100 books about life on the island. The house also offers an insight into what life was like here over a century ago.
Skiathos has several beaches worth visiting. One of the most popular with younger visitors is Big Banana, which gets its name from being shaped just like the yellow fruit. For more tranquillity, the best beach to head to is Koukounaries, the most famous on the island.
If looking for somewhere to eat, the best place to find authentic local cuisine is Elaias gi (Olive Land). It serves plenty of traditional Greek dishes and has an extensive wine list if you fancy a lovely nightcap to end your day.

Airport Information

Skiathos Airport ‘Alexandros Papadiamantis’ is the island’s main air terminal, lying half a mile northeast of Skiathos town centre. It has mainly seasonal flights to destinations all over Europe, acting as an air terminal for the Sporades islands.
Getting there is easy from the centre of Skiathos town. The Periferiakos Skiathou road takes you northeast to the airport.
