Car Hire Shannon

Shannon is a small town in County Clare, just a few miles east of the famous city of Limerick. Gaining its name from the river which runs just south of the town, Shannon was first established in the 1960s as a new town. Today, many international businesses have offices and warehouses here, helped by its status as a gateway to the Atlantic. The weather here can be a little on the breezy side, especially when the nights begin to draw in during autumn and winter. However, in summer, the Shannon region is among the most beautiful parts of Ireland. The rocky coastline and scenic walks around the town heading towards Limerick and the county town of Ennis all make a visit here worthwhile

Important things to note

Shannon Free Zone is home to thousands of employees who regularly commute from Limerick. Traffic on the N18 can be pretty heavy in mornings and evenings as a result.
Traffic is pretty heavy because of the fact that Shannon Airport is next to the town itself. The N19 actually ends at the airport.
Any tourist information you might need about what to do in Shannon is most likely available at the airport or the town’s Skycourt Shopping Centre.

Highlights & Hotspots

In Limerick, you can watch world-class rugby union from the Munster team, who regularly challenge for major honours at Thomond Park. Gaelic football and soccer are also played here, while some of the local rugby sides ply their trade on the pitch, too.
Also in the city, King John’s Castle is the main landmark here. Located on King’s Island, it is open most weekdays and has regular tours. Here, you can get panoramic views of Limerick which includes the Milk Market, where you can grab a bargain on a weekend.
Bunratty Castle and Folk Park is just a few miles east of Shannon. The complex has plenty of places to bed down as well as have breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s right alongside the N18 and E20 routes that head towards Shannon.
Shannon Golf Club is a nice place to play a few holes. From the moment you tee off here, you’ll find yourself distracted by the wonderful views in front of you as you try to negotiate your way out of a tricky bunker.

Airport Information

Shannon Airport is the third busiest airport in the Republic of Ireland. Working as a terminal for the country’s West Coast, there are regular flights to the US and cities across the UK, not to mention seasonal flights to France, Portugal and Spain.
The airport is at the end of the N19 road and is just half a mile from the town centre. The road connects to the N18/M18 towards Limerick and Galway.
