More passive art fans may simply want to soak up the stunning architecture seen all around the city, which has influenced other European cultural hot spots, including Barcelona. The famous Statue of David is featured in the Polo Fiorentino Museum and is one of the cities most visited attractions.
If you like Opera music, then you are in the right place as it was also born in Florence. There are many places to watch world class performances, one such gem being the small, intimate St Mark’s Anglican Church. Many non-fans have been converted here, as they soak up the sounds in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings.
Bordering on humid subtropical and Mediterranean climates, Florence is also one of the best producers of fine wine in the world. The Chianti region boasts Sangiovese grapes, as well as Super Tuscan blends and of course, Chianti Classico wines. Situated not far south of the city, it is a bucket list must for any serious connoisseur.
Despite being a fiercely cosmopolitan, culture rich hub, some of the best places to eat and drink are surprisingly affordable. Trattoria Mario located in the Piazza Mercato Centrale is always busy, but delivers a real taste of Florence without having to break out the credit card.
