Introduction

Alicante is a city, port and capital of the province of the same name located on the Costa Blanca in Spain. Popular amongst tourists owing to its winning combination of gorgeous sandy beaches, lush green parks and city life; Alicante boasts an excellent nightlife and shopping as well as traditional Spanish culture. Considered as one of the most renowned beach holiday destinations with over the 300 days of warm weather and glorious sunshine a year, Alicante boasts six stunning beaches that are perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. There’s also a wealth of Spanish culture to discover, from historic buildings and medieval fortresses to the wonderful little streets and alleys lined with Spanish cafes and bars. The weather really heats up around the end of June with temperatures hitting the 30˚C mark in July and August.

Alicante, like much of the region, is famous for its slightly slower pace of life. As such, the streets aren’t as busy as in the Spanish capital, so a comfortably family car is fine for experiencing what the city has to offer. There are a few beaches and towns within driving distance, and the roads are fairly quiet.

Important things to note

The sun can be very intense during the summer, so take care to protect yourself.
Alicante is generally a safe place to visit and locals are very friendly, though it is always advisable to keep your money and valuables safe.
If you stay in the old town, many of the areas of interest are within walking distance.

Highlights & Hotspots

The primary reason for holidaying in Alicante is for the range of excellent beaches for sunbathing and water sports.
To experience some of Alicante’s history and culture it is worth taking a trip to the Santa Barbara Castle, which sits above the city. One of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, this historic site is free to visit and offers stunning views out over the city.
Alicante is also home to Europe’s highest water chute ride, which you’ll find over an Aqualandia Waterpark. With splash and wave pools and immense waterslides it’s a great place to visit for families with young kids and teenagers.
For other thrill-seeking activities, the Terra Mitica theme park is only a 20 minute drive from the city. There are loads of rides suitable for kids of all ages, making it the perfect family day out.
Take a trip to Rancho La Ofra for a ride on horseback through the stunning Guadalust valley in Costa Blanca. Here you’ll ride along the banks of the River Guadalest and through the mountains of the Costa Blanca.

Airport Information

Alicante airport (ALC) is located roughly seven miles south of the city. To get to the city of Alicante from the airport take the Autovia Alicante-Murcia at the airport junction. Alternatively, you can take the national road the N-340.
