For those wanting a diverse holiday in the sun, then Gran Canaria is the perfect choice. Often referred to as a “continent in miniature” owing to the diverse range of what’s on offer here, Gran Canaria is an ever-popular holiday destination and the third largest of the Canary Islands. The shorelines boast glittering sandy beaches and pure shores of clear blue seas stretching into the horizon. Las Plamas de Gran Canaria is the capital located in the northeast of the island and is one of Spain’s largest cities. Whilst the south of the island is home to many beaches and tourist resorts, Gran Canaria still has plenty of places to explore and discover for yourself. There are a wide range of beaches including those that are perfect for relaxing with a cocktail and soaking up the sun and others that are more tranquil open spaces offering low-key evening entertainment. The centre of the island is home to dramatic mountains which almost dominate the island. For the active holiday maker, Gran Canaria has plenty on offer from water sports to hiking and horseback riding. Elsewhere you’ll discover charming towns and bustling metropolises. The warmer weather normally hits around mid-June with temperatures reaching up to 26˚C in summer.

Important things to note

Crime levels are generally very low, but in more popular resorts you might encounter some rather lively crowds.
It’s recommended to exercise a good level of personal security as pickpockets and petty thieves operate in busier areas.
Avoid walking through the city of Las Palmas late at night and if parking in the city, always choose well lit areas and do not leave valuable belongings in the vehicle.

Highlights & Hotspots

Take a trip to Gran Canaria’s capital – Las Palmas to indulge in a little retail therapy in its bustling shopping districts, dotted with vibrant bars and cafes. The centre of Las Palmas is a small and historic area of interest which is currently undergoing a regeneration project which will soon become the cultural hub of the capital.
Plamitos Park is a great place to visit for all the family. Here you’ll encounter Gran Canaria’s wildlife and see the shows with dolphins as well as the impressive birds of prey.
There’s no better place to go to admire the stunning architecture of Gran Canaria than the Casa/Museo de Colón surrounded by palm trees and fountains. Inside you’ll find a museum where you’ll discover the accounts of Columbus’ voyages as well as an art gallery on the upper floors.
The beaches are the perfect place for the more active holiday-maker with range of different water sports on offer including surfing and scuba diving.
