Introduction

Famous for its golden sands and mild, dry climate, Lanzarote is a magnet to sun worshippers looking to unwind safe in the knowledge that the chance of rain is highly unlikely. Situated almost 80 miles off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote was born and formed from volcanic eruptions. As a result of this, much of its landscape away from its glistening blue ocean and sandy beaches bears resemblance to the surface of the moon. As well as being a haven for relaxation, there’s plenty of attractions and activities for families whether it be the water and wildlife parks, or the many different boat trips on offer. For the more adventurous types, there is a wide range of water sports on offer, and the strong Atlantic winds along the long beaches make surfing conditions just perfect.

Important things to note

Car hire is essential in Lanzarote if you want to explore more than just the major sights, and as it only takes 40 minutes to drive north to South and 25 minutes across, nothing is ever very far away.
Roads and sign posts in Lanzarote are generally very good, so those nervous driving in a strange country needn’t worry.
It’s important to note that some of the locals will tend to use the outside lanes at roundabouts regardless of which exit they are taking, so take extra caution here.
You must carry your driving licence and car hire agreement with you at all times, so that you can prove you are in fact insured to drive the vehicle should you be stopped by the local police.

Highlights & Hotspots

A trip to Lanzarote is not complete without paying a visit to Timanfaya National Park. A great way to experience the volcanoes and craters, a trip here is as educational as it is fun, whether you go by guided coach or camel. Visit the restaurant, where you can watch your meal cooked over the volcanic rocks and then enjoy jaw dropping views of the park as you eat.
Known as the Hawaii of Europe, the conditions on Famara Beach are a great way to catch some waves whether you’re a beginner or an expert. Scuba diving and more extreme sports are very popular on the island, where the terrain is deemed good enough to host an annual Ironman contest which combines biking, swimming and running.
For those that like the finer things in life, head over to Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca which has plenty of boutique stores offering premium brands, art galleries and smaller shops selling products unique to the area. The floating terraces along the beautiful Marina make the perfect setting for a romantic meal.
Rancho Texas Park is another fantastic place to visit with family. Featuring gold mines, exotic animals, birds of prey and themed evening entertainment, including lasso performances and a BBQ, it has a unique take on Wild West American culture.
There are also plenty of boat trips to choose from, including whale and dolphin watching excursions, where sightings are almost guaranteed.

Airport Information

Arrecife airport is situated on the east coast of the island, three miles from Arrecife town and six miles from Puerto Del Carmen. As the Island is relatively small, it’s very convenient to reach any destination.
ATM fees for cash withdrawals are extortionate (roughly 8 Euros), so either bring currency with you, or wait until you arrive at your resort where you will pay around 1.50 euros.
