Car Hire Oviedo

In the Spanish district of Asturias, Oviedo is a medium-sized city which dates back to the 8th century. It acts as the main hub for commercial and administrative activity in the region, while it has a significant number of historical sites which have helped to shape the city over the centuries. Oviedo also has a number of Asturian hill towns and villages nearby worth exploring. People often come here to see some of the many buildings given World Heritage Site status, to go shopping or sample its burgeoning nightlife. The weather usually helps, as even in winter, it can be mild in Oviedo. Although inland, Oviedo isn’t too far away from the beach either, making a quick escape to the shore pretty easy.

Ideal car

As one of the main cities in Asturias, a car for all roads is needed. As luck would have it, a typical hatchback fits the bill, being as adept in the city as it would be heading out into the countryside.

Important things to note

The majority of central Oviedo is pedestrianized. To be on the safe side, it’s worth leaving your car in a parking lot near the centre.
Some of the roads which are passable in the city centre are narrow and allow for driving on both sides, often causing jams.
Oviedo’s main ring road is the best route to find out where to go if leaving for one of the other main cities or towns in Asturias, but is prone to traffic at times.

Highlights & Hotspots

The Casco Antiguo, otherwise known as the Old Town, is the best part of town to visit. Here, you’ll find some of the city’s most notable landmarks including the Velarde Palace, Town Hall and the Palace of Torero.
Arguably the most impressive building in the Old Town is the Cathedral of San Salvador. With a predominantly gothic façade, it also has a few flourishes from the 11th century. Tours are available, although demand is pretty high.
Elsewhere in Oviedo, the Museum of Fine Arts is a good place to go if you don’t want to pay an admission fee. The Museum has a large number of artworks from decades gone by, with a few contemporary paintings to boot.
One of the most interesting events in the city is La Ascencion, a fair which takes place every may. It celebrates all things agricultural by hosting arts and crafts stalls, local produce and a few folk bands, plus it’s a family-friendly event.

Airport Information

Asturias Airport is 20 miles northwest of Oviedo. It has one terminal for passengers, serving destinations throughout Spain. Some international destinations are also served including London, Geneva and Paris.
