Car Hire Doncaster

A large town in South Yorkshire, Doncaster is known for having a long industrial heritage, although its past in coal mining and manufacturing has since gave way to sport and leisure. Its location near the A1 and on the East Coast Mainline makes Doncaster a good place to do business, although its cultural scene is becoming a major attraction for visitors. Doncaster has plenty on offer for anyone who likes to go shopping. It has two markets and one of the largest indoor shopping centres in the country, not to mention various retail parks. Sport is also big here, particularly horse racing, football and rugby league. It’s also well-connected by road, rail and air should you want to get out and explore the local area.

Ideal car

As Doncaster is a large town which attracts a lot of traffic, something small to make moving around in tight spots would be perfect, with a city car fitting the bill.

Important things to note

There are three main Park and Ride facilities in the town. They are at Highfields in the north, Parrots Corner near Rossington to the south and near the Lakeside.
Traffic can be pretty heavy during rush hours on the A638 Trafford Way up to Church Way, which runs underneath the Frenchgate Centre.
The M62 can be reached either via the A1 or, going out east, from the M18 which reached a junction near Goole.

Highlights & Hotspots

Doncaster Racecourse is one of the most important horseracing venues in the UK. Every September, the St. Leger Stakes, one of the biggest races in the sport’s calendar, takes place at the course, attracting thousands of punters. Other big races are held here annually.
The city’s main shopping destination is Frenchgate, a large shopping centre with over 100 outlets. Although many of them are chain stores, it has enough choice to keep even the pickiest shoppers satisfied when looking for a bargain.
Although it’s one of the smaller museums in the county, Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery is fascinating. The museum has plenty of exhibitions and artworks accurately depicting local life throughout the decades and centuries.
A little further away is the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum. Reflecting how important civilian and military flight is to the area, it has working models of light aircraft among the artefacts on display. It might be possible to even go on a tour of the cockpits, with permission!

Airport Information

Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Airport is six miles east of the town centre. Despite being close to other major airports in the region, it serves a handful of destinations across Europe, with more flights available during the summer months.
The airport is near the A614, which connected to a minor road leads west to the A638. That road will take you straight towards the centre of Doncaster in a northerly direction.
