Car Hire Dover

Famous for its chalk white cliffs and being the last port of call before tourists descend the English Channel, Dover has more than meets the eye, making it worthy of more than just a stop off destination. With picturesque sea views, it also has a number of traditional pubs and great restaurants to enjoy. With a huge cliff top castle overlooking the sea that harbours over 2000 years’ worth of history, there is plenty of Maritime history in Dover that goes a lot further back than the World War I and II. The oceanic climate makes for moderately warm weather like much of the UK, although winters can be a little unpredictable.

Ideal car

A compact, fuel efficient economy car is perfect for Dover where you will encounter few difficulties whilst driving, even in the busy town centre.

Important things to note

Driving around Dover is not especially problematic, but expect to pay for parking in most areas.
Avoid walking near the edge of the cliffs as weather conditions can be windy and don’t forget your walking boots.
Although not directly linked to the motorway network, the M2 to Canterbury and M20 to Greater London aren’t too far away.

Highlights & Hotspots

A visit to the infamous White Cliffs of Dover is essential, where you can take in breath-taking ocean views. It’s a great spot for keen walkers and on a clear day with good visibility you’ll be able to see the French coastline.
Sitting proudly above the pretty white cliffs is the sprawling Dover Castle. Here you can explore the dark and eerie Secret Wartime Tunnels, and even relive the Dunkirk evacuation, albeit it a much safer version, complete with soaring spitfires and vintage film footage.
Authentic down to the old fashioned ticket dispenser, the independent and charming Silver Screen Cinema takes you back to the 1920s and allows you to watch the latest blockbusters at a fraction of the cost the big players charge.
For some traditional British pub grub, mixed in with some more modern dishes, visit The Archer Public House. Gammon with fried egg or pineapple, pulled pork are just a few of the dishes served alongside a decent range of ales. La Scala is noted as being the best Italian restaurant in Dover and provides the backdrop for many special occasions at a decent price.

Airport Information

Dover doesn’t have an airport of its own, but is a 50-minute drive from Lydd Airport in Kent which takes flights from a limited number of destinations.
Most people flying in will use Gatwick, which is about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away. Heathrow is roughly an hour and 45 minutes’ drive, while Stansted Airport is a similar distance away. The A20, leading to the M20, will take you to the M25.
