Introduction

The East Midlands is a region in the UK which is made up of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire and parts of Lincolnshire. The region covers the most eastern part of England. There are large parts of the region which are ideal for those who love hiking and walking including The Peak District, Sherwood Forest and The Lincolnshire Coast. The region offers plenty of opportunities for outdoorsy types who love exploring the natural landscapes, from hiking and camping to climbing and mountain biking. There’s also plenty to explore in the cities of Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Nottingham with each city offering museums, theatres, music venues and a range of great restaurants.

Highlights & Hotspots

Anyone visiting the region should take a trip to the beautiful Peak District National Park. The area, comprising most of North Derbyshire, is made up of rounded hills and is excellent for walking with many trails and hiking opportunities.
Nottinghamshire is home to Sherwood Forest, the alleged home of Robin Hood. This area has been redeveloped as a leisure park in recent years, but the forest is still home to some of the oldest trees in Europe – including the Major Oak which has been standing in the forest for 800 years.
A visit to Lincoln to explore the cathedral is a must for those with an interest in history and architecture. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe, the cathedral also houses one of four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta.
Leicester, the region’s most popular city, is a great place for shopping. The Highcross Shopping Centre, recently renovated, is home to numerous department stores and national chains, while you can also visit the Haymarket if you want something a little different.
