Introduction

Located about 25 miles northeast of Milan, Bergamo is considered one of Italy’s most intriguing cities. The city is actually split into two separate towns. The upper town, cittá alta, is located on the hilltop and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lower city, cittá bassa is home to a range of restaurants and bars and is a cultural hub for visitors. Take the time to explore the maze of narrow streets and discover the Gothic churches, art galleries, museums and charming cafes. In the cittá alta you’ll discover a range of stunning architecture, particularly around the Piazza Vecchia, and historical hotspots as well as traditional Italian cafes and restaurants. The Bergamo Alps are a stone’s throw away and are home to a number of ski resorts. More adventurous holiday makers will enjoy the ice and rock climbing opportunities that are also available here.
